Chemical Peels are versatile tools that are used to resurface the upper layers of your skin by loosening the bonds between the dead skin cells that dull your skin while stimulating the collagen beneath the skin to form and align, which in turn plumps up the fine lines and scars from below the surface. They have been around since Cleopatra bathed in milk (contains lactic acid) to make her skin smooth.
Chemical peels help speed up skin cell turnover and repair the damaged skin, smooth lines, and wrinkles, evens out pigmentation spots or discolorations and stimulate collagen synthesis, making them excellent resurfacing treatments. Chemicals like AHAs, Trichloroacetic acid and phenol are used for this purpose.
It is highly advised to go for the treatment under the guidance if an experienced doctor because if the apt method and peel is not chosen there is a chance of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Alpha Hydroxy Peels (AHA):
Alpha hydroxy acids are a group of natural acids from foods. Some alpha hydroxy acids are gluconolactone; citric, glycolic, lactic, and malic acids; and others.Derived from natural sources like fruits and dairy products, alpha hydroxyl peels are used for superficial skin peeling. A superficial alpha hydroxy chemical (also known as Glycolic) peel is a quick, no downtime procedures that renews the skin by lifting dead cells off the surface of your skin and stimulating metabolism of the cells underneath. They are used to exfoliate the epidermis and stimulate collagen growth. With a series of alpha hydroxy chemical peels, you can quickly achieve a substantial improvement in the appearance of superficial lines and uneven pigmentation while making your skin look and feel softer, smoother, and more radiant. Acne scars and enlarged pores may become less noticeable, and acne breakouts may be reduced.
Many skin problems are associated with the excessive build-up of dead cells making the skin hardened and dull. Problems are exacerbated by exposure to the sun, pollution, and other environmental effects, leading to skin damage and disease.
Results can be seen after the third or fourth treatment. For best results, 4 to 8 treatments are needed 2 weeks apart.

Are there any Side Effects of AHA Peels?
Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels that use glycolic, lactic and citric acid solutions are rarely associated with major side effects or health risks. Minimal irritation and redness may be present after treatment, which normally subsides within 48 hours. Some drying may occur that can lead to light flaking or shedding as the skin adjusts to the treatment. These transient effects depend upon the aggressiveness of the AHA solution. If irritation or soreness persists, the provider can prescribe topical medication. A light, non-greasy moisturizer can also be applied to maintain the skin’s hydration levels.
Beta Hydroxy Peels (BHA):
Chemical peels that use beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) are considered mild to moderate peel solutions. Salicylic acid, is the most commonly used beta-hydroxy acid for BHA chemical peel solutions. This type of chemical peel has quickly become the popular peel of choice for those who desire visible results, but cannot spare the time to recover from more aggressive chemical peel solutions.
Beta hydroxy acid is reported to improve wrinkling, roughness, and mottled pigmentation of photo-damaged skin after at least 6 months of daily application.
Similar to alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels – BHA peels provide moderate exfoliation and skin rejuvenation results that retexture, smooth and brighten the skin. Rough and dry patches can be resurfaced, uneven pigmentation spots can be reduced and the look of fine lines and wrinkles can be improved as dead skin cells detach and generate new skin cell growth. Various concentrations of BHA peels with salicylic acid prove to be more effective than water-based AHA peels. This is based on the fact that salicylic acid is a lipid-soluble, and therefore can penetrate deep into oily skin types, more so than citric or glycolic AHAs. Acne blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads and plugs of keratin and dirt can be treated more effectively with BHA chemical peel solutions.
Are there any Side Effects of BHA Peels?
Beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) peels that use salicylic acid solutions are rarely associated with major side effects or health risks. BHA peels that incorporate salicylic acid can provide effective results without post-irritation or dramatic swelling. Despite this fact, beta hydroxy acid can still cause minimal skin irritation and redness, which normally subsides within 24 hours. Symptoms of irritation include redness, burning, itching, pain, and possibly scarring. Some drying may occur that can lead to light flaking or shedding as the skin adjusts to the treatment.
Alpha Beta Chemical Peels can truly stop your acne outbreaks in its tracks. The Beta component, Salicylic Acid, is a common treatment for acne, but we have increased the concentration to a more effective level than you can get over the counter. In addition, the presence of the second component, the alpha hydroxy Acid (Glycolic Acid) helps keep your skin exfoliated and fresh, preventing the ability of acne to form under the skin and in the pores. Combination Peels can retexturize the skin, restoring the radiance of your youth.
At Appleskin, we offer various concentration of combination peels depending on the needs of the skin type, however we classify the combination peels in two major categories:
Light Combination Peels
These peels help with blotchy skin, skin discoloration, and also refine skin texture and help reduce sun damage, precancerous conditions (keratosis) and scarring.
This has a combination of two different treatments meshed together for greater results. There are a variety of treatments with a combination of micro dermabrasion and a light application of chemical peeling agents. This treatment will be customized to the patient’s individual needs.
Who would benefit from exfoliation treatments with Combination Peel?
Many skin problems are associated with excessive build up of dead cells making the skin hardened and dull. Problems are exacerbated by exposure to the sun, pollution, and other environmental effects, leading to skin damage and disease.
Mild exfoliation treatments are usually suitable for all skin types including those patients with acne or sensitive skin. All skin types can be treated. All age groups and all areas of the body can be treated. Also suitable for patients with hormonal pigmentation problems such as melasma. Individuals who have sunspots, sun-damaged skin, dry, ageing skin, oily skin with enlarged pores and acne scarring are also good candidates.
With Combination peels differences are noticed not only on the surface of the skin, but with the concentration of these peels the deeper layers of the skin are also treated, thus the following improvements can be noticed:
